Samsung galaxy M40 Review : samsung’s value for money offering

Galaxy M40

Samsung has entered the value for money smartphone market with the launch of its M-series. Samsung Galaxy M40 offers very value for money package. Samsung is trying hard to sell well no. of mid-range smartphones.

Design and Build quality

M40 comes with 2 color options:- Midnight blue and seawater blue. The phone is made up of polycarbonate plastic processed to look like glass. It has a punch hole design on the display for the front camera. The screen of the phone is protected by gorilla glass 3. It is the first phone of samsung without a 3.5mm audio jack and it uses type-c for charging and earphone. The phone has good build quality.

Display Quality

M40 comes with 6.3 inch FHD+ TFT display with 1080*2340 pixel resolution. The display is one of the best TFT panel available right now in the market but Samsung could have easily provided a Amoled Display as it provides one with Galaxy A50. Display quality is good but A50’s display is always better. M40’s display quality can be concluded as similar to the Redmi Note 7 pro.

Hardware

Samsung has learnt from its previous mistakes and has started to provide good specs.

SOC ( cpu, gpu)

Galaxy M40 comes with snapdragon 675 soc. SD 675 is based on 11 nm transistor technology and is very battery efficient. It uses 2×2.0 GHz Kryo 460 Gold & 6×1.7 GHz Kryo 460 Silver. It comes with Adreno 612 Gpu which can run all the latest games for android.

RAM and Internal storage

It comes with 6 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128 GB internal storage of eMMC5.1 type. Read speed is around 220 MB/s and write speed is around 125 MB/s. The phone is very smooth and responsive in real life.

Software

Samsung has improved a lot on the software side from last years. Samsung has introduced a new generation of its Android skin i.e one UI. One UI looks promising and it is specially designed for one-handed use. Samsung now uses the android skin on its flagship and mid-range phones with the release of M40. One more interesting thing, M40 is the first Mid-range phone to have one UI out of the box. One UI is smooth and provides a flagship like experience to the user. Samsung has also improved in terms of software updates with the latest One UI. So, on the software front, it is good to go.

Dual Sim type and expandable storage options

It supports Dual Nano Sim (4G+4G). It comes with a hybrid slot for the expandable micro-sd storage i.e if you want to add a micro-sd card then you can only use one sim. The storage is expandable upto 512 GB with the micro-sd card.

Sound Quality and Call quality

The Phone comes with Dolby Atmos certification for surround sound. It comes with type-c earphone included in the box. The loud-speaker have good audio quality with respect to the segment.

In call quality area, the phone a unique and new approach, It uses screen sound technology that transforms your screen into a call speaker. It does not have a normal call speaker. In our test, we found the screen is vibrating when on a call and it does not feel good and the call quality has some issues that can be resolved in software updates.

Battery And Charging

It has a 3500 mAh battery and it supports 15 W fast charging. A type-c 15 W fast charger is included in the box. It takes almost 1.5 Hrs to charge the phone from 0 to 100.

Camera

Samsung has improved a lot in the post-processing department. Summarising, the camera takes better photos than its in-house competitor A50.

It comes with a triple rear camera setup i.e 32 MP + 8 MP + 5 MP. It uses the 32 MP sensor as the primary sensor. The 32 MP sensor has an aperture of F1.7. The 8 MP sensor has an aperture of F2.2 and it is used as ultra-wide lens with 123° view. The 5 MP sensor has an aperture of F2.2 and it is used for depth sensing or you can say for live focus.

The on-paper video capabilities state that the phone can record 4K video at 30 fps and it can also record slow-motion video at 240 fps. It also has hyperlapse video feature. It can also record video from ultra-wide angle sensor. The colours are better than before. The drawback of the M40 camera is that it lacks stabilisation i.e the videos are going to be shaky.

In front, M40 uses a 16 MP, f2.0 aperture sensor. Selfies have bad post-processing and samsung should improve these via a software update. Selfie cam takes washed out photos.

Dustproof/water-resistant??

The M40 is not water-resistant. It can get damage due to water exposure.
